The report was released in April 1950 in a large paperback edition featuring over 100 photographs of the parish as well as detailed inventories of real estate, water resources, minerals, agriculture, et cetera. The report was generously loaned to me by Suzanne B. The Atchafalaya Basin is right across the levee, and Bayou Teche, Bayou Amy, Bayou Benoit and Bayou Portage are all less than ten miles away. I’m surrounded by water and wetland in all directions. The day before the bridge was taken down, I went to Butte La Rose and photographed it. He documented his years at the school by maintaining a scrapbook, which included photographs that he took, newspaper articles that he clipped and various mementos that he collected. The collection, which dates from 1962-1990, includes old film photographs of La Grande Boucherie and the Tiny Tot playground in St. Martinville when it was brand new. What I didn’t know when I started out, I can now state with confidence. St. Martin Parish is ideal for kayaking. Not only because of the sheer number of waterways, but also because of the extraordinary variety of waterways—bayous, bays, lakes, coulées, even a major river, shapeshifting from season to season.
